It’s a problem so many dog parents face, and I hear it so often “Ali, my dog shreds beds, I want to get her something nice, but it turns into confetti – what do I do?” Well, since hearing that, I’ve been on the look out for tough but comfort-giving beds. Because all dogs deserve comfort, right?

Its chew-proof claim is a bold statement in a market flooded with fleeting promises that I think we’ve all become immune to. But the ballistic chew proof cots were getting a lot of solid reviews, so we had to investigate!

What I Loved

The lack of vulnerable spots? Ugh! The way K9 Ballistics have enclosed all the edges of that heavy-duty material in a perfect metal frame, (It’s ballistic fabric! so it has a grid-like rip-stop weave) – honestly, it’s pure genius. Resilience is the cornerstone of this bed’s design, with a focus on combating the most vigorous nibblers. The material withstands the onslaught of teeth and claws, effectively nullifying the anxiety pet owners feel when leaving their dog home alone with traditional beds. There’s a palpable sense of relief in knowing that the bed won’t unravel into a pile of shredded textiles, showcasing K9 Ballistics’ commitment to quality and strength in their products.

Light as a Feather

One of the coolest perks of the K9 Ballistics bed is how surprisingly lightweight it is. most of our dog beds, given their size and support levels weigh a lot and are pretty cumbersome to move – and I didn’t realise how different this would be. Whether you’re rearranging your living space, doing a deep clean, or just want to shift your pup’s sleeping spot to facilitate a thunderstorm – this was a super pleasant surprise I totally appreciated.

Elevating Comfort

I was hesitant when it came to elevated cots and beds and these weird ‘hammock style’ beds – I thought it was a bit nuts if I’m honest. But… I will say. These bets are not bad at all. 

Whilst I’m not sure they offer the same tier of support that a properly structured orthopedic bed does – they do absolutely give an option for dog guardians whos dog is destructive, but still deserves not to lay on a hard floor.

You’ll know it’s a hit when your dog, often the toughest critic, takes to it without hesitation. I have three dogs, all of them happily slept on it. 

I will say – it wasn’t taken to like some other beds I have tested, and took a little encouragement, but it was unanimously preferred to a blanket, a hard floor, and when it comes to dogs who shred beds? This is their choices.

But, I will absolutely keep this updated as I expose it to some of my most determined destroyers of beds! I know a couple of dogs who will absolutely put this “Tough rip-stop bed” to hard testing!

The bed’s fabric and construction allow for hassle-free maintenance — a dash of Dawn dish soap, some gentle scrubbing, and a rinse with the shower head (it suggests cold water, but I preferred warm so I could keep scrubbing) is all it takes to return the bed to pretty much brand new.

This minimal effort to upkeep not only reinforces the bed’s durability but also ensures that your pet’s sleeping area remains hygienic and odor-free. For busy pet owners, this feature is a substantial boon, as it translates to less time spent cleaning and more time enjoying the company of their cherished companion. The convenience of being able to swiftly and effectively clean the bed, ensuring it looks “good as new” after each wash, is just another reason this product is a standout choice for pets and their humans alike.

Note: While the overall design and functionality of the bed receive glowing remarks, a word of caution is necessary regarding color choice. Specifically, the Sandstone color option that I went for, although aesthetically pleasing, tends to highlight muddy paw prints and dirt so easily – and I can’t imagine the others are quite so bad. This visibility can lead to the bed looking unkempt between cleanings, detracting from the otherwise clean and well-maintained appearance of your pet’s resting area. Given the effortless cleaning process, this isn’t a dealbreaker for me, but for those seeking to minimize the appearance of dirt in between washes, opting for any other color would be a wise decision. 

What I Didn’t Love

The Price of Permanence

Let’s get real about the price tag on the Chew Proof Armored™ Bed from K9 Ballistics. It’s pretty steep, and that initial cost might give you sticker shock. It’s a bit like buying those top-shelf sneakers instead of the bargain bin ones: you pay more now, but they last so much longer.

Think about it — how many times have you tossed out a chewed-up dog bed and had to buy a new one? Those costs add up, and before you know it, you could’ve bought on of these chew-proof beds with the money spent and more comfy nights for pup. This bed is more of a one-and-done deal; you buy it once, and it keeps going strong for years, saving you from the endless cycle of replacing cheaper beds that just don’t hold up. 

An Inconsistent Customer Service Experience

A product journey isn’t complete without a nod to the support that accompanies it – I’ve not personally had any reason to contact them, but for those who have? Yeesh…  It’s seeming you be a bit of a problem to make claims on the 120-day warranty after their dogs destructive behaviors are challenging the tough rip-stop dog bed. Which is not what we want to see. 

While many companies excel, some reviews indicate that K9 Ballistics’ customer service hasn’t always met expectations – and when you’re in the premium market, marketing towards stressed dog guardians? They should be expecting to hold up to their claims. These reports of dissatisfaction, from less-than-helpful representatives to unaddressed concerns, serve as cautionary tales for would-be buyers – not to mention that if you do get a refund, it’s explicitly only to store credit, which may not really help if your dog is a persistent chewer who is defeating the ballistic rip-stop cover that even their orthopedic mattresses have. Most of use would prefer it back on the credit card.

The Waiting Game

K9 Ballistics offer fedex home delivery – but it’s slow. In today’s culture of same-day deliveries, waiting an extended period for a purchase to arrive can sour the shopping experience – I know it was for me! Gosh, I wanted this yesterday, and even on amazon it’s like a week’s wait… Slow delivery has been a thorn in the side for some customers of K9 Ballistics, suggesting a need for the company to streamline their logistics to match their product’s quality and customer expectations. And when other competitors are delivery next day? 

A Questionable Approach to Discounts

As a consumer, it’s enticing to spot a deal or discount! And I certainly got suckered int other offer of a 40% discount—on an almost $200 bed? Yes please! 

However, when the discount system is confusing or misleading, it tends to sour the experience – and that’s what I found. I didn’t even see a discount I’m pretty sure. No code… just spamming my phone and my emails to buy. Maybe I’m daft, but their discounts tend to be unclear, often leading potential customers to believe they’re getting more of a deal than might be the case. 

Do I Recommend It?

With a keen eye on the balance between the positive attributes and the shortcomings of the Chew Proof Armored™ Rip-Stop Elevated Dog Bed, I can quite confidently recommend it. 

Yes! Whilst it calls for an upfront investment, and yes, the company could polish some aspects of customer experience. But, when pitted against the headache of constantly replacing lesser beds torn asunder by diggy-shreddy antics, this product has held up against my dogs, pretty solidly.
