I would move the main walk earlier on fireworks night rather than trying to squeeze it in once bangs have started.
A missed evening walk is far less important than avoiding a frightened dog bolting, backing out of equipment or having a panic response far from home.
Walk Before Dark if You Can
Exercise and toileting are easier before fireworks begin and before your dog is already worried.
If fireworks are common in your area, check local event times and aim to be home well before they start. People also set off private fireworks unpredictably, so I would not cut it too close.
Skip the Long Walk Once Fireworks Start
Once bangs are underway, I would switch from “normal exercise” to essential toilet trips only.
Your dog does not need to complete a mileage target that night. Indoor sniffing, food enrichment, tug or a short training session can fill the gap much more safely.
Use More Secure Gear Than Usual
- Use a well-fitted harness.
- Use a fixed-length leash.
- Make sure ID tags are current.
- Do not rely on recall.
- For known escape risks, consider a backup connection between harness and collar.
Fear changes behavior. A dog who is normally sensible may make very different decisions after a sudden bang.
Keep Toilet Trips Short
Wait for the quietest gap you can find, stay close to home and keep the trip functional. If your dog toilets quickly, go back inside.
If they freeze or try to retreat, do not drag them farther from the house in the hope they will eventually relax.
What If Your Dog Refuses to Go Outside?
That is not unusual after a frightening event. Use the closest quiet area you have and keep pressure low.
