When Should You Spay or Neuter a Yorkipoo? What the Parent-Breed Data Suggests

Yorkipoos are small dogs, but small does not automatically mean neutering age is irrelevant.

There is no Hart study specifically on Yorkipoos, so there is no direct UC Davis recommendation for a Yorkipoo neutering age.

The best available evidence is component-breed data from Yorkshire Terriers and Poodles.

What is neutering?

Neutering usually means surgical castration of a male dog by removing the testicles. It prevents breeding and removes the main source of testosterone.

What is spaying?

Spaying usually means removing the ovaries alone or the ovaries and uterus. It prevents pregnancy and removes ovarian hormone production.

So when is the best time to spay or neuter a Yorkipoo?

There is no single Hart-backed Yorkipoo age.

Component Dogs studied Male guidance Female guidance
Yorkshire Terrier 321 No specific delay No specific delay
Toy Poodle 238 No specific delay No specific delay
Miniature Poodle 199 At least 12 months No specific delay

For most Yorkipoos, the Yorkshire Terrier and Toy Poodle components are relatively reassuring. The main reason for caution is Miniature Poodle ancestry in males.

What did Hart find in Yorkshire Terriers?

The Yorkshire Terrier dataset included 321 dogs.

The breed did not show a notable increase in the measured joint disorders associated with neutering age. Cancer occurrence was also low, and Hart did not recommend a specific age restriction for either sex based on the outcomes studied.

That is reassuring, but it still does not mean every age has been proven equally safe for every individual dog.

What did Hart find in Toy Poodles?

Toy Poodles did not show a clear age-related increase in joint disorders or cancers in either sex.

What did Hart find in Miniature Poodles?

Miniature Poodle males were different. In males neutered at 6–11 months, Hart found a significant 9% occurrence of joint disorders, largely cranial cruciate ligament disease, leading to a recommendation to delay neutering until at least 12 months.

Females did not show the same clear increase.

What does that mean for a Yorkipoo?

A very small Yorkipoo from Yorkshire Terrier and Toy Poodle lines has fairly reassuring component evidence.

If Miniature Poodle ancestry is involved, particularly in a male, there is more reason to be cautious about the 6–11 month window.

Knowing the actual Poodle parent is more useful than relying on the label “Yorkipoo” alone.

What about behavior?

Neutering does not automatically stop barking, anxiety, adolescent excitement or poor recall. Some directly hormone-driven behaviors may change, but training and emotional development are separate.

If behavior is part of the decision, read my behavioral considerations article.

Are there other options?

A vasectomy can sterilize a male while retaining testosterone. For females, an ovary-sparing procedure may be worth discussing. Chemical castration may also be available in some countries.

About the study

The parent-breed evidence comes from Hart and colleagues’ retrospective UC Davis veterinary-record research. It is observational, not randomized, so it identifies associations rather than proving cause and effect.

This study is a fantastic guideline, but it is only a guideline.

Other considerations and limitations

  • Yorkipoos were not directly studied.
  • The studies are retrospective.
  • Parent-breed findings cannot be averaged into a hybrid recommendation.
  • Subgroup size matters when results are split by sex and age.
  • No statistically significant increase does not mean “proven safe.”
  • The Hart study covered selected joint disorders and cancers, not every possible health outcome.

Questions to discuss with your veterinarian

  • Was my Yorkipoo bred from a Toy or Miniature Poodle?
  • What adult size is expected?
  • Is there joint disease or cancer in either parent line?
  • Can I safely manage an intact dog for longer?
  • Would a hormone-sparing procedure make sense?

The bottom line

There is no single evidence-backed Yorkipoo neutering age.

The Yorkshire Terrier and Toy Poodle data are relatively neutral, while Miniature Poodle ancestry creates a reason for more caution in males neutered before one year.
