Maltipoos are a smaller doodle cross, and the parent-breed evidence is generally less concerning than it is for the large doodles.
There is no Hart study specifically on Maltipoos, so there is no direct UC Davis recommendation for a Maltipoo neutering age.
The best available evidence is component-breed data from Maltese and Poodles.
What is neutering?
Neutering usually means surgical castration of a male dog by removing the testicles. It prevents breeding and removes the main source of testosterone.
What is spaying?
Spaying usually means removing the ovaries alone or the ovaries and uterus. It prevents pregnancy and removes ovarian hormone production.
So when is the best time to spay or neuter a Maltipoo?
There is no single Hart-backed Maltipoo age.
| Component | Dogs studied | Male guidance | Female guidance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maltese | 272 | No specific delay | No specific delay |
| Toy Poodle | 238 | No specific delay | No specific delay |
| Miniature Poodle | 199 | At least 12 months | No specific delay |
For most Maltipoos, the Maltese and Toy Poodle components are relatively reassuring. The main wrinkle is Miniature Poodle ancestry in males.
What did Hart find in Maltese?
The Maltese dataset included 272 dogs: 49 intact males, 72 neutered males, 65 intact females and 86 spayed females.
No joint disorders were reported in either sex, whether intact or neutered. Cancer occurrence was also very low, with no clear evidence that neutering at a particular age increased risk in the outcomes studied.
That is reassuring, but it is not proof that every age is identical for every Maltese or Maltipoo.
What did Hart find in Toy Poodles?
The Toy Poodle dataset included 238 dogs and did not show a clear increase in joint disorders or cancers associated with neutering age.
What did Hart find in Miniature Poodles?
Miniature Poodle males were different. In males neutered at 6–11 months, Hart found a significant 9% occurrence of joint disorders, largely CCL disease, and suggested delaying neutering until at least one year.
Females did not show the same clear increase.
What does that mean for a Maltipoo?
A small Maltipoo from Maltese and Toy Poodle lines has fairly reassuring component data.
A larger Maltipoo from Miniature Poodle lines deserves a little more caution, particularly in males. I would not assume that six months is automatically the ideal date simply because the dog is small.
What about behavior?
Neutering does not automatically calm a Maltipoo down, stop barking, fix anxiety or replace training. Some directly hormone-driven behaviors may change, but learned behavior and emotional development are separate.
If behavior is part of the decision, read my behavioral considerations article.
Are there other options?
A vasectomy can sterilize a male while retaining testosterone. For females, an ovary-sparing procedure may be worth discussing. Chemical castration may also be available in some countries.
About the study
The parent-breed evidence comes from Hart and colleagues’ retrospective UC Davis veterinary-record research. It is observational, not randomized, so it identifies associations rather than proving cause and effect.
This study is a fantastic guideline, but it is only a guideline.

Other considerations and limitations
- Maltipoos were not directly studied.
- The studies are retrospective.
- Parent-breed findings cannot simply be averaged.
- Small age-by-sex subgroups can limit statistical power.
- The study looked at selected joint disorders and cancers, not every possible health effect.
- Individual health, adult size, family history and management still matter.
Questions to discuss with your veterinarian
- Was my Maltipoo bred from a Toy or Miniature Poodle?
- What adult size is expected?
- Is there joint disease in either parent line?
- Can I safely manage an intact dog for longer?
- Would a hormone-sparing procedure make sense?
The bottom line
There is no single evidence-backed Maltipoo neutering age.
The Maltese and Toy Poodle components are relatively reassuring, while Miniature Poodle ancestry adds a reason for more caution in males neutered during the 6–11 month period.
