Rex Specs creates durable and stylish dog goggles designed for active pets. Founded in 2015 by a team of outdoor enthusiasts, the company aims to protect dogs’ eyes while allowing them to participate in adventures.

In this review, I’ll provide an in-depth look at the latest iteration of the rex specs, the Rex Specs Goggle V2 to help pet owners determine if these eye goggles are a good solution for their four-legged friends. My goal is to highlight key features and assess how well these doggie goggles perform for outdoor activities like running, hiking, hunting, and more. As an experienced pet product reviewer and dog owner myself, I aim to provide an objective and helpful review based on testing the Rex Specs Goggles V2 first-hand.

If you have an active dog and have been considering this for you best friend, you may well want to give this a read!

Introducing the Rex Specs Goggle v2

Rex Specs V2 Dog Goggles
8.4
  • Interchangeable lenses
  • Easy to fit
  • Easily scratched

The Rex Specs are probably the best of their kind on the market, and the quality is undeniable. They've invested in the right pieces, making them flexible, not rigid, but still allowing for comfort for your dog!  They're a really well thought through piece of kit for those who need them.
My biggest criticism is that the lenses scratch really easily which definitely deteriorates the visual appeal, though I don't think it compromises the functionality.

Note: I do want to say here, is that it's immensely uncommon for dogs to need sunglasses or protective eye gear if they're not running through dense brush or riding in a fast moving vehicle with their face exposed.

We tested;

We tested the rex specs v 2, the new and improved version of the original rex specs dog goggle in gray, a size large, and a couple of replacement lenses (Smoke lens). The rex specs lenses are replaceable, and come with clear lenses as standard. The goggles are constructed from ballistic-grade polycarbonate lenses and high-impact polymer frames. This makes them extremely impact-resistant while still remaining lightweight. The materials are also optically correct, providing distortion-free viewing whilst protecting from UV rays including UVa and UVb rays.

We removed the lens for fitting (which I thoroughly recommend you do to), as it allowed us to see if there was any gaps.

An adjustable neoprene strap allows you to customize the fit for any dog’s head size. It has a quick-release pinch clip for easy on and off. The rounded frame shape and soft padding around the eyes are comfortable for extended wear.

The lenses feature scratch-resistant and anti-fog coatings to maintain clarity. Available lens tints include clear, smoke gray, and amber/yellow and more. The amber lenses enhance contrast and depth perception. All the lenses offer 100% UVA/UVB protection against harmful rays. With the sealed foam gasket, the goggles provide complete eye protection while retaining peripheral vision.

Fit

The Rex Specs Goggles V2 come in 5 size options, ranging from extra small to extra large, designed to fit most dog breeds and face shapes, we had the Large size, but it fitted well from our skinnier faced coonhounds to my larger faced german shepherd.

The goggles feature an adjustable strap that goes around the back of the head for a snug yet comfortable fit. The foam padding around the edges conforms nicely to the dog’s muzzle without pinching or chaffing. We didn’t experience any issues (with proper training), but generally speaking most people who purchase the Rex Specs report that dogs don’t seem bothered at all by wearing the goggles – which is likely because they also come with a “how to train” your dog to wear these – which I think is fantastically responsible.

The goggles stay securely in place even when dogs are running and playing, and don’t impinge on full jaw motion. The close fit blocks debris or other environmental hazards from entering eyes from the sides or top of the goggles. For dogs with shorter snouts, an optional extender allows the goggles to fit properly while maintaining the seal against dust and dirt.

With multiple sizes and adjustability, the Rex Specs Goggles V2 offer a tailored yet comfortable fit for active pups. The snug seal gives dogs eye protection without the goggles slipping around on the face.

Visibility

The Rex Specs dog goggles provide excellent visibility for your pup while protecting their eyes. The curved lenses offer a wide field of vision so your dog can freely look around without obstruction. The lenses are made of impact-resistant polycarbonate, providing optical clarity while remaining shatterproof.

Unlike some dog goggles that have a small viewing window, the Rex Specs goggles wrap around the face to give dogs a full 180-degree range of vision. This allows them to run, jump, and play while letting them easily see their surroundings. The wraparound design also prevents glare and sunlight from entering at sharp angles.

However, they do block some vision. This became apparent through some of our testing. Because it effectively “blinkers” your dog, it definitely trims off some of their peripheral vision – typically it’s not a problem, and only one of our three dogs had any confusion about what was going on when we moved things out of her new visibility range.

In terms of light protection, the tinted lenses filter out damaging UV rays and bright glare that can bother doggy eyes. The lenses come in a variety of tint colors like yellow, gray, and mirrored lenses to match different lighting conditions. This ensures your dog’s eyes stay healthy and comfortable in any environment with potentially harmful elements from snowy mountain trails to sunny beaches.

Overall, the excellent visibility and optical clarity of Rex Specs dog goggles allow your pup to safely and comfortably explore the world around them. The durable, high-quality lenses protect your dog’s vision while providing a wide, unobstructed field of view.

What I love

Durability

The Rex Specs dog goggles are made with very durable materials that hold up remarkably well under regular use. The polycarbonate lenses are shatterproof and scratch-resistant, protecting your dog’s eyes even when running through brush or other debris.

The frames are composed of flexible yet sturdy thermoplastic that maintains its shape despite your dog’s active lifestyle. You don’t have to worry about the goggles warping or becoming misshapen over time. Owners report the goggles lasting for years with continued use, which is a testament to their sturdy construction.

Even the rubbery TPU strap that secures the goggles is rip- and chew-resistant. Dogs won’t be able to easily destroy or remove the goggles once you have them properly adjusted. Overall, the high-quality materials and components of the Rex Specs dog goggles allow them to withstand regular wear and tear for lasting performance. You can feel confident investing in a pair knowing they are built to last through all of your adventures together.

Ease of Use

Putting on and taking off the Rex Specs dog goggles is very easy thanks to the adjustable strap design. Simply place the goggles over your dog’s eyes and head, and use the top and bottom straps to secure them in place. The straps are adjustable, so you can find the perfect custom fit for your dog.

To take the goggles off, simply unclip the side release buckles on each strap. This allows you to slip them right off without having to re-adjust the sizing each time.

The goggles are also easy to adjust for an optimal fit. The top strap can be tightened or loosened to account for different head shapes and sizes. Rex Specs recommends adjusting the top strap first for vertical alignment, and then using the bottom strap to bring the lenses in close to the eyes for horizontal adjustment. There is plenty of velcro on the straps to customize the fit.

Cleaning the polycarbonate lenses is straightforward. Rex Specs recommends rinsing them with lukewarm water and wiping them with a microfiber cloth. Avoid using any cleaners or chemicals, as they can damage the lenses over time. The lenses are scratch-resistant, so you can safely wipe away dirt and debris without worrying about abrasion. Being able to easily clean the lenses means you’ll always have optimal visibility for your dog.

Value

When considering the value of Rex Specs dog goggles, it’s important to weigh the price against the quality and durability of the product. At around $80-100 per pair, Rex Specs are more expensive than many basic pet goggles. However, Rex Specs are designed for active dogs that need rugged eye protection, not just basic sun shielding, and their impact resistant frame and even the materials they use, truly justify that.

The polycarbonate lenses offer impact resistance and UV protection and are thinner than other lenses. The dual adjustable straps ensure a customized fit, while the open design allows for ventilation and comfort. Rex Specs also come with multiple lenses, allowing owners to switch out lenses for different conditions.

Compared to competitors, Rex Specs deliver better optics, durability, and vision coverage at a reasonable price point for the target customer. While cheaper goggles exist, they may lack the quality and eye protection serious dog owners demand. More expensive options offer similar quality but less versatility with fewer lens options. Ultimately, Rex Specs provide the ideal combination of performance, protection, and value for active, working dogs.

Appearance

They look cool right? Serious bad ass vibes. Rex Specs goggles have a stylish and sleek appearance that looks great on any dog. They come in a variety of fun colors like orange, pink, blue, and black so you can choose the perfect look for your pup.

The goggles have a sporty, rugged aesthetic that is well-suited for outdoor activities. The flexible frame and adjustable strap ensure the goggles contour nicely to your dog’s face without being too tight or uncomfortable. This gives them a natural, customized fit.

When worn properly, the Rex Specs sit close to the eyes to provide full protection. But they don’t protrude too far off the face or look cumbersome. The smooth rounded lenses and slim profile give dogs a cool adventurous look when wearing the goggles.

Your dog will look like an athletic superstar ready to take on any excursion while stylishly protecting their eyes. The Rex Specs goggles allow pets to explore and play in comfort without compromising their visual appearance.

Variety

I will say, with the different shades of this, and colours of that, Rex Specs offer something that will suit even the snobbiest dog gear aficionado for colour matching of for fun colourings. We opted for gray – primarily because I wanted it to work with most of Indie’s gear, which tends to be black or gray – and because I loved how the gray looked with the smoke lens – very cool.

What I Don’t Love

They don’t pair well with muzzles

Because of the nose access, the shape and size of the goggles means it interferes with proper fit and a secure fit of both. Whilst this won’t be an issue for everyone, it will for some and is something I like to point out, and in terms of your dog’s needs, the muzzle may just be more important.

They’re a bit gimmicky

They’re trendy. I’ve covered in a separate article whether protective eyewear is actually needed for most dogs, and truthfully, not that many dogs need goggles, usually only if they have some sort of eye ailment or are regularly exposed to fast moving debris, or are rapelling from a helicopter (which most of our pets just aren’t). Eye problems aside, I see the appeal, but I’m willing to bet that half of those showing off these gorgeous form of protection in those great videos, they’re not necessarily required.

Slow Shipping

I placed domestic orders for these. when you order from Rex specs in the united states they take a surprising amount of time to deliver in this day and age. It took at least 8 business days  of delivery, and I know when I looked into this in the UK, the international destinations were really slow and expensive for delivery, but you’ll get the most accurate time frame direct from Rex Specs as they know their production lead time far better than I do.

Additional Accessories

Rex Specs offers a wide variety of additional accessories to enhance your dog’s goggles and improve their vision protection.

Some useful accessories include:

  • Anti-Fog Inserts – These inserts fit underneath the lens of the goggles to prevent fogging in humid conditions or during active play. This helps maintain visibility for dogs.
  • Tear Stain Pads – These soft pads adhere to the inner edges of the goggles to absorb tear stains and prevent irritation. They keep your dog’s face clean and comfortable when wearing the goggles.
  • Head Straps – Elastic straps that wrap around your dog’s head to provide extra security and stabilization for the goggles. Great for very active pups.
  • Different Lens Colors – Color options like amber, blue, and clear offer enhanced visibility in various light conditions.
  • Prescription Lenses – For dogs with visual impairments, prescription lenses can be added to the goggles to correct vision.

With helpful accessories like these, Rex Specs enables full customization so your dog can see clearly and comfortably during all adventures and activities. The accessories enhance the utility and performance of the goggles.

Do I Recommend The Rex Specs V2?

For those who need it? Yes.

The Rex Specs dog goggles are the highest quality product that provide protection and safety for your dog while allowing them to see clearly and play comfortably. The goggles give peace of mind knowing your dog’s eyes are shielded during outdoor activities or in wet and dusty environments – but they’re not needed by the majority of dogs.

The goggles are designed to provide a secure yet comfortable fit. The adjustable strap and different sizing options help get a snug yet not too tight fit for your dog. The polycarbonate and silicone construction makes the goggles lightweight yet durable enough for active play.

Visibility does not seem to be impaired when dogs are wearing the REX Specs goggles. The wrap-around lens provides a wide field of vision and the anti-fog feature keeps the lens clear. Most dogs adjust quickly to wearing the goggles.

Overall, the REX Specs dog goggles are recommended for pet owners looking to protect their dogs’ eyes while still allowing them to play and be active outdoors. The goggles are thoughtfully designed for comfort, visibility, and adjustability. The only downsides may be the price point and the limited color/style options. However, for those wanting durable and high-quality eye protection for their pets, the REX Specs goggles are a top choice.
