I love audiobooks, so when a trainer releases an audiobook, you can guarantee I’m downloading it ASAP!
I love dog training books – like physical books – please don’t get me wrong – but I so rarely have time to sit down and genuinely enjoy a good book. So dog audiobooks are perfect for me (and you!) if you’re a busy soul as you can multitask and have a (usually pleasant) human voices read you the book.
Dog training (naturally) is a huge passion of mine as a dog trainer, and it’s something most dog owners (like you!) want to learn at least something about so they can have a better relationship or get through a certain issue (like Separation anxiety!) with their furry friend.
These dog training books are all available on Audible – which is my preferred platform, but they don’t vary that much in terms of availability across other platforms.
What is Audible?
Audible gives access on your phone to audio books. I love audio books, I use it when I’m walking or hiking with my dogs, washing dishes or cleaning. I find it’s a much better use of my mental time. So, why not use that time for dog training info! The audible membership works on a monthly credit amount which makes these audiobooks your best deal.
Please note, these are affiliate links and I will get a small commission if you decide to go ahead and get one of these! But it costs you no more than it would normally.
10 Best Dog Training Audiobooks
And here is my list of the best audiobooks – and trust me – they’re great audiobooks!

![]() | This book is probably the most accessible option for new dog parents - this goes through all the basics of your new puppy - from a sit to potty training. It's super easy to get involved in, it's not too long, it doesn't go too deep on theory, but gives you enough insight into your dog, what they need and what you need to consider whilst raising them. I love that level of understanding and transferability - I also love that this has been written and read by Steve Mann (head of the IMDT) and gives anecdotal examples. | Check Price

![]() | How Dogs Think: What the World Looks Like to Them and Why They Act the Way They Do | This book is really interesting to me, because Stanley Coren has done a lot of studying in the world of canine science, and, this book shows it. From sharing some anecdotes to explaining that a german shepherd is more short sighted than a greyhound - which is fascinating. The book delves into how the world is seen by your dog, and whilst it's not a how to get your dog to sit sort of book, it is a lot of wonderful learning into your dog's why they are this way which positions you best to understand them and teach them. | Check Price |

![]() | Meet Your Dog: The Game-Changing Guide to Understanding Your Dog’s Behavior | I love this book. Honestly, it's still something I refer to when I'm working with an obscure breed to remind myself what they're going to need or love to do when we're working together. For example, I've been working with an keeshound, and I know they're a watch dog, and I know I've learned a lot about them in the past, but I can't retain it all. This book is enough to trigger all the knowledge I need again. But for you? It can give you insight into the world of other dogs, so you can be the most considerate dog parent in your local park, and the very best dog parent you can be. Still it's a fantastic read/listen! | Check Price |
![]() | The Forever Dog: A New Science Blueprint for Raising Exceptionally Healthy and Happy Companions | A New York Times Best Seller, this book is again a little more of the holistic approach of dog training, but it will provide a fantastic insight into your dog, their health and wellbeing. Which all impacts training. I enjoyed this book (though, I do recommend that you don't take it too literally, there is some heavy marketing or selectively selected science in here to my mind), and it gave a good insight into the world of food and health for our dogs from not using fabric softener, to how diet works within them. | Check Price |
![]() | Zak George is a really good trainer made famous by his youtube channel, he follows a "LIMA" training style (and focuses on positive reinforcement, especially lately since the AVSAB statement), and he gives a good insight into behavior, and common problems in dog training. He's relatable, and the book is definitely appropriate for the 'average' dog parent, which I love. | Check Price

Criteria
Non-Fiction
All of these books are factual books, learning books or “non-fiction” books (aka not Jane Austen, hehe). I may do another list of great fiction books one day (like Garth Stein – Art Of Racing In The Rain). But for now, let’s focus on the best factual books to help dog lovers to achieve their best dog.
Training method
So, you’ll note that there are some rather famous names missing from this list. A certain Mr Cesar Millan (who claims famously to be a dog whisperer), and the monks of new skete – these are missing because they contain a lot of out of date methodologies that shouldn’t be replicated.
But, sadly because they still sell, they will continue to be sold. Which is incredibly disappointing that human greed is more highly rated than using the best possible ways of training – but greed is rotten.
What do you think?!
If you listen to any of these and love them, hate them, or have other recommendations that I should delve into? Comment below! I’d love to hear from you!
