Goldendoodles are another crossbreed where a single blanket neutering age is much less useful than understanding the evidence behind the parent breeds.
Hart et al. did not study Goldendoodles as a separate breed group, so there is no direct UC Davis Goldendoodle recommendation.
What we do have is component-breed data from Golden Retrievers and Poodles, plus the mixed-breed weight study for broader context.
Important: this is not Goldendoodle-specific evidence. The parent-breed sample sizes stay separate and should not be added together as if they were one Goldendoodle cohort.
What is neutering?
Neutering usually means surgical castration of a male dog by removing the testicles. It prevents breeding and removes the main source of testosterone.
What is spaying?
Spaying usually means removing the ovaries alone or the ovaries and uterus. It prevents pregnancy and removes ovarian hormone production.
So when is the best time to spay or neuter a Goldendoodle?
There is no single Hart-backed Goldendoodle age. But the component evidence strongly supports being cautious about very early surgery in medium and large Goldendoodles.

What did the Golden Retriever data show?
The Golden Retriever dataset included 1,247 dogs.

The first-year orthopedic signal is substantial, especially in males under six months. Female cancer occurrence is also why the Golden Retriever recommendation is unusually cautious.

What did Hart find in Standard Poodles?
The Standard Poodle dataset included 275 dogs: 47 intact males, 88 neutered males, 53 intact females and 87 spayed females.
Joint disorders occurred in 2% of intact males and females. In males neutered before six months, joint disorders rose to 8%, although that increase was not statistically significant.
The more striking finding was cancer. Males neutered at around one year had a significant increase in one or more cancers, driven by lymphosarcoma. That is why the consolidated male guidance is considerably later.
What about Miniature and Toy Poodles?
Miniature Poodles had 199 dogs in the study. Males neutered at 6–11 months had a significant 9% occurrence of joint disorders, driven largely by CCL disease, so Hart suggested waiting until at least 12 months.
Toy Poodles had 238 dogs and did not show a clear age-related increase in the measured joint disorders or cancers.
What does the mixed-breed weight study add?
Hart also studied mixed-breed dogs by adult weight, which matters because Goldendoodles can range from relatively small Mini Goldendoodles to very large Standard crosses.
In the 20–29 kg / 43–64 lb group, earlier neutering was associated with significantly higher joint-disorder rates, particularly in females. Similar size-related patterns appeared in larger weight groups.
This is not Goldendoodle-specific evidence, but it supports taking adult size seriously.
What does that mean for a Goldendoodle?
A 20 lb Mini Goldendoodle and a 70 lb Standard Goldendoodle are not the same timing problem.
For males, Golden Retriever and larger-Poodle ancestry both provide reasons not to rush. For females, the Golden Retriever component is especially important because the cancer picture is complicated and the first-year joint signal is strong.
What about behavior?
Neutering is not a general fix for adolescent exuberance, barking, anxiety, reactivity, pulling or poor recall. Hormone-driven behaviors may change in some dogs, but training and emotional development are separate.

Are there other options?
A vasectomy can sterilize a male while retaining testosterone. For females, an ovary-sparing procedure may be worth discussing. Chemical castration may also be available in some countries.
About the study
The parent-breed data comes from Hart and colleagues’ retrospective UC Davis veterinary-record research. It shows associations, not proof that neutering at a particular age directly caused or prevented a condition.
This study is a fantastic guideline, but it is only a guideline.

- Goldendoodles were not directly studied.
- Golden Retriever and Poodle findings cannot be averaged into a hybrid risk.
- The Poodle variety behind the cross matters.
- Age-by-sex subgroups are smaller than the total breed samples.
- No statistically significant increase does not mean “proven safe.”
- The studies measured selected conditions, not every possible outcome.
- Growth rate, genetics, family history, body condition and exercise still matter.

- Which Poodle variety is behind my Goldendoodle?
- How large is my dog expected to be?
- Is there orthopedic disease or cancer in either parent line?
- Can I safely manage an intact dog for longer?
- Would a hormone-sparing procedure make sense?
- Are there individual medical reasons to operate sooner?
The bottom line
There is no single evidence-backed Goldendoodle neutering age.
The Golden Retriever component gives a strong reason not to treat very early surgery as neutral, and the Poodle component can strengthen that case depending on the variety and sex. The final decision should be individualized around size, sex, genetics, lifestyle and safe reproductive management.
