The Ruffwear Sun Shower is my go-to raincoat for Indie, my German Shepherd. I’ve used this style across my German Shepherd and my hounds, and it does the job I actually want a raincoat to do: it keeps the dog dry without adding warmth, weight or restricting movement.
I’ve tested a lot of dog coats over the years, and plenty make simple things unnecessarily complicated. The Sun Shower isn’t one of them. It’s lightweight, genuinely waterproof in my experience, easy to throw on, and the higher storm collar gives a little more protection around the neck than many basic dog raincoats.
My quick verdict: I love it. It’s expensive for what is, ultimately, a rain shell — welcome to Ruffwear — but I’d buy it again.

What Is The Ruffwear Sun Shower?
The Sun Shower is Ruffwear’s lightweight waterproof and windproof dog raincoat. Importantly, it isn’t an insulated winter coat. Ruffwear currently uses a waterproof nylon ripstop shell with a 3,000 mm waterproof rating, a nonfluorinated DWR finish and PU coating. It also has an oversized storm collar, extended coverage over the hips and thighs, reflective accents, optional leg loops and a leash portal for using a harness underneath.
That distinction matters. If your dog needs warmth as well as rain protection, look at an insulated coat or consider layering. If you just need to stop your dog getting soaked while letting them move normally, a shell like this makes much more sense.
What I Love About The Ruffwear Sun Shower
It Actually Keeps Indie Dry
This is the obvious one, but it’s surprisingly easy for a dog raincoat to fail at being a raincoat.
I’ve found the Sun Shower perfectly waterproof in real use. That’s ultimately why it became my go-to raincoat for Indie. When the weather is miserable and I need something I know will work, this is one of the coats I reach for.
It’s Lightweight
There’s no unnecessary insulation here. That’s a positive.
A wet day isn’t necessarily a cold day, and a German Shepherd certainly doesn’t automatically need extra insulation every time it rains. The Sun Shower gives me weather protection without turning every damp walk into a winter-coat situation.
The Neck Coverage Is Useful
I really like that the coat comes further up the neck. Ruffwear calls this the oversized storm collar, and you can fold it up for additional coverage. It’s a small design detail, but it makes the coat feel much more useful in actual rain than a flat-backed sheet that leaves the neck exposed.
Movement Has Been Excellent
I’ve had no weird movement issues with this coat so far, either on my hounds or my German Shepherd. They can walk and move freely without the coat interfering with their normal gait.
That’s something I pay quite a lot of attention to with dog gear. A coat being waterproof isn’t much consolation if the dog has to alter the way they move to wear it.
It’s Very Easy To Put On
This isn’t one of those coats that makes you question whether you accidentally bought a canine escape room. It’s simple and quick to get on and off. Ruffwear uses side-release buckles and a relaxed fit, and in practice I find it super easy.
Fit: One Thing I’d Watch
The Sun Shower has fitted my dogs well and hasn’t caused movement problems, but the chest adjustment does have limits. On a particularly unusually proportioned dog, I could see that becoming the thing that determines whether the coat works.
So don’t just choose a size based on breed. Measure your dog, particularly around the widest part of the rib cage, and look at the whole shape of your dog as well as the number on the size chart. Ruffwear currently offers the vest from XXS through XL.
Using The Sun Shower With A Harness
I use the harness under the Sun Shower. There’s a leash portal in the back of the coat to access the harness attachment point.
I’ve had no meaningful issues doing this beyond the normal bit of extra bulk you get whenever you’re layering equipment. Make sure the harness still fits properly underneath and that the combination isn’t creating pressure or rubbing around the dog’s shoulders or armpits.
How Warm Is The Ruffwear Sun Shower?
It isn’t.
And that’s not a criticism. The Sun Shower is a waterproof shell rather than an insulated dog coat. If you’re shopping because your dog gets cold, this isn’t the product I’d buy as their only layer.
For wet and cold conditions, a shell also gives you the option of layering over an appropriate fleece or sweater. We’re doing more standardized insulation and layering tests across our dog coat collection, so I’ll add those results here when they’re available rather than pretending that “feels warm to me” is useful data.
What I Don’t Love About It
It’s Expensive For A Raincoat
This is the main downside for me. The Sun Shower is a really good raincoat, but you’re paying Ruffwear money for it.
I don’t think every dog owner needs a premium rain shell. If you only walk briefly in light rain, there are cheaper ways to keep a dog reasonably dry. What you’re paying for here is the combination of waterproofing, low weight, coverage, movement and a design that’s been easy for me to live with.
Is The Ruffwear Sun Shower Worth It?
For me, yes.
I wouldn’t call it cheap, and I wouldn’t tell you that every dog needs one. But I own it, I’ve used it across very different dog shapes, it’s my go-to raincoat for Indie, and I’d buy it again. That’s about as straightforward a recommendation as I can give.
- Buy it if: you want a lightweight, genuinely waterproof shell with good coverage and free movement.
- Skip it if: you’re primarily looking for warmth, or you only need occasional basic rain protection and can’t justify the premium price.
- Check the fit carefully if: your dog has particularly unusual chest proportions, because the chest adjustment isn’t limitless.
